Berne
Berne is the capital of Switzerland. It is a city of medieval
magic. The town was
founded in 1191 by Berchthold V. Duke of Zähringen for
political reasons. After
the great fire in 1405 which almost completely destroyed the
wooden-built town,
the houses were rebuilt with sandstone. This unchanged
medieval appearance
is one of the most carefully conserved in Europe. In 1848
Berne was chosen as
the seat of the Federal Government and the Federal Congress.
Besides being the
seat of the Swiss Federal Authorities, Beren is also the
National Bank, embassies
and several international organizations, e.g. Universal Postal
Union, Central
Office for international Railway Transports.
Solothurn -
Switzerland's finest
baroque town harmoniously combines Italian
grandeur with French charm and German Swiss stability. It is hardly surprising
that there are not less than three names for this town steeped in tradition on the
banks of the Aare. It is the capital of the canton with the same name and harmoniously combines
Italian grandeur with French charm and German Swiss
stability. Gates, towers and gables testify of its old traditions.
Solothurn's reputation as Switzerland's best-preserved and most beautiful
baroque town is well earned. The writer Carl Spitteler as the „fabulous city of
golden roofs“ has indeed described it. Solothurn is one of the oldest towns north
of the Alps..
