Fribourg
Founded in 1157, Fribourg rises from the banks of the
River Sarine. Parts of the
old town defences are preserved in many places. In the
prent-day Quartier du Bourg,
the original town, the
three-aisled cathedral of St. Nicholas was erected
between 1292 and 1490 on the site of a Romanesque church from
the 12th
century. The cathedral, visible from a considerable distance,
is the landmark
of Fribourg.
